Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, after months of rumors and speculation and guesses, are finally married. The week of the wedding, the rumor quickly spread that—despite previous news releases to the contrary—that the couple would be actually getting married at Versailles. This rumor came just months after a statement by the Chateau de Versailles organization, which indicated that the couple would not be getting married there. This second rumor was quickly squashed when it was revealed that Kim and Kanye would actually be getting married in Italy and having their pre-wedding reception celebration at Versailles instead. But why didn’t the couple get married at Versailles, which by all indications was their desired wedding destination? Let’s look at a few of the reasons that are more than likely involved in the ultimate decision to not allow the couple to marry at the famous palace.
Kim and Kanye Did Not Meet France’s Marriage Requirements
Non-French citizens can get married in France; however, the country does have certain regulations regarding foreign marriages that must be adhered to–regardless of where in France the couple will be marrying. These regulations include proof of residence in France, which neither Kim nor Kanye have. In addition to this, the French government requires various certificates, including French-translated full birth certificates, an affidavit notarized by an attorney who is licensed to practice law in France and the home country, and so on. Because they did not meet the most basic requirement—residency—it is unlikely that the other requirement, including the many certificates, would also be met.
The Chateau de Versailles reserves the right to restrict what type of events are hosted there.
Although the chateau de Versailles can be rented out, with some exclusions and reservations, the official Chateau de Versailles organization reserves the right to restrict just who celebrates there and what type of celebrations occur. Although some couples have in fact been married at Versailles, these couples were typically significantly wealthier than Kim Kardashian and Kanye West combined, and they also (most importantly!) met the country’s marriage requirements.
In addition to this, it should be noted that the reputations of both Kim and Kanye in France are not exactly positive.
The Chateau de Versailles may have not wanted the potential negative publicity and paparazzi swarms that the wedding would have naturally brought to the site. The
