All the Hollywood Sexual Misconduct Scandals You Need To Know

The Hollywood sexual misconduct scandals that started in late 2017 show no sign of abating. After legendary film producer Harvey Weinstein was called out for a pattern of sexual misconduct in October 2017, literally hundreds of women have stepped forward with their own stories of being sexually assaulted, intimidated or even raped by some of the most famous men in Hollywood today. Here’s a list of all the Hollywood sexual misconduct scandals you need to know…

Harvey Weinstein

In just the first month after the sexual misconduct allegations surfaced, more than 80 women – many of them actresses and models – shared their own stories of being harassed, bullied and intimidated into having sexual relations with Weinstein. Even worse, this pattern of behavior appears to have taken place over decades. In response, Weinstein was removed from the leadership of his film production companies and stripped of his membership in Hollywood’s prestigious Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. It was Weinstein who sparked the nationwide #MeToo movement on social media, and in many ways, he has become the poster child for Hollywood sexual misconduct.

Kevin Spacey

The star actor of Netflix’s “House of Cards” saw his own house of cards collapse once co-workers and actors stepped forward with their own stories of how Spacey created a sexually-charged work environment on his film and TV projects. Perhaps the most damning revelation came from an actor who alleged Kevin Spacey attempted to have sex with him when he was just a 14-year-old boy, nearly 30 years ago. That allegation opened the door further for accusers, who began to cite incidents of sexual harassment that might have taken place decades ago, but were just now coming to light.

Dustin Hoffman

Need more proof that the #MeToo movement was unafraid to take down the biggest names in Hollywood? Look no further than Hollywood legend Dustin Hoffman, who is now alleged by six actors and actresses of sexual abuse. Back in 1985, for example, Hoffman allegedly made sexual advances on a 17-year-old male assistant. In other cases, Hoffman propositioned fellow actresses, attempting to have sex with them in his hotel rooms.

James Toback

Hollywood director and writer James Toback was already the subject of a blistering Los Angeles Times investigative report into his sexual misconduct dealings with 38 women when another 200 women stepped forward with their own sordid details of how Toback attempted to have sex with them. That makes a grand total of 238 alleged cases of sexual misconduct. To put that into perspective, that means that Toback attempted to sexually harass one new woman, every week of the year, for nearly five straight years!

James Franco

Some of the charges of sexual misconduct have been more innuendo than formal complaint. Now, some top Hollywood actresses are bringing up James Franco as a potential sexual deviant. For example, actress Ally Sheedy sent out a cryptic tweet, suggesting that Franco was the reason that she left the film and entertainment business. Other women have now claimed that Franco tried to convince them to do full frontal nudity scenes in his films, mostly out of his desire to seduce them. What made the allegations all the more damaging for Franco is that he won a Golden Globe award on January 7. Two days later, he was forced to show up on Stephen Colbert’s “The Late Show” to deny any wrongdoing.

Morgan Spurlock

The documentary director Morgan Spurlock, best known for his film “Super Size Me,” owned up to a history of sexual misconduct that dates all the way back to his college days. His history of rape allegations once again resurfaced, putting Spurlock into the spotlight. Later, Spurlock admitted that he had cheated on just about every one of his romantic partners, including his two wives, and that his pattern of sexual activity was far from normal.

Louis C.K.

One of America’s funniest comedians also got caught up in a series of sexual misconduct allegations that trace out a sordid history of more than 15 years. The most damaging of those came from two fellow comedians (both women), who alleged that Louis C.K. would often undress in front of them and then masturbate. Other women claimed that Louis C.K.. would call them in the middle of the night, while obviously in the middle of masturbating.

Steven Seagal

The action hero Steven Seagal has now been accused by three women of sexual misconduct, including one incident in which he used a “casting couch” to seduce a woman and force her to take off her dress. Other women have claimed that Seagal exposed himself to them in a hotel room.

Many Others Accused

That’s just a partial list of all the powerful directors, producers and actors who have been called out on the Hollywood black carpet of shame for a past history of sexual misconduct. These Hollywood insiders have also fallen from grace:

  • Paul Haggis – Accused by five women of rape and forcible oral sex
  • Matt Lauer – Accused of sexually harassing and intimidating women on the set of the “Today” show
  • Jeremy Piven – Accused by multiple women of various forms of sexual misconduct
  • Brett Ratner – Accused of raping or abusing several high-profile actresses
  • Charlie Rose – Fired by CBS News, PBS and Bloomberg for groping women on the set and walking around naked in front of them
  • Russell Simmons – Accused of aggressive sexual behavior, including forcible oral sex and a potential shower rape
  • Jeffrey Tambor – Accused of sexually harassing transgender actors
  • Ben Vereen – Accused of sexually abusing two women on the set of a community theater production of “Hair”
  • Ed Westwick – Accused by two actresses of sexual impropriety

As the Hollywood #MeToo movement gathered in intensity in 2017, it started to take down powerful men in the media and government – including former comedian and current Senator Al Franken, who admitted to forcibly groping a woman in 2006 while on a USO Tour. And don’t forget about former President George H.W. Bush, who has been accused of telling dirty jokes around women and lightly patting their behinds as a way of flirting with them.

While the accusations have been sordid and salacious in many cases, they are important because they have helped to shine a new light on Hollywood. The first brave women who stepped forward in late 2017 have cleared the path for other women to tell their stories. In doing so, they may be bringing much-needed change to Hollywood.

Learn About Lady Gaga in Netflix’s “Gaga: Five Foot Two”

Lady Gaga is undeniably one of the world’s most famous and talented musicians, and now Netflix is bringing us a new behind-the-scenes documentary that looks at a year in the life of this celebrated icon. “Gaga: Five Foot Two” takes us inside the making of her fifth studio album (“Joanne”) and gives us an inside look at the making of her halftime performance for Super Bowl LI. There’s a lot we can learn about Lady Gaga from this important new Netflix documentary.

“Gaga: Five Foot Two” shows us Lady Gaga’s relationship with her fans

First and most importantly, this new Netflix documentary gives us an unprecedented look at Lady Gaga’s relationship with her tremendously devoted fan base. It is clear from this behind-the-scenes look at Lady Gaga that she really feeds off the energy and passion of her fans, and that’s why the fan encounters that “Gaga: Five Foot Two” depicts are so illuminating – they show us the character and persona of Lady Gaga. We see how she feels a unique burden to live up to the expectations of her fans – and also how these brief fan encounters are a way for her to energize and re-charge.

“Gaga: Five Foot Two” gives us an unforgettable look at the Super Bowl LI halftime show

Has there ever been a more iconic and talked-about Super Bowl halftime show in recent memory than the one featuring Lady Gaga in 2017? The way she stood on top of the stadium in Houston and dove to the stage, and then burst into her most popular songs ever – it was simply incredible. And so “Gaga: Five Foot Two” gives us the remarkable story of how the show was dreamed up, how it was executed, and why it was so meaningful to Lady Gaga to pull off such a career-defining performance.

“Gaga: Five Foot Two” gives the viewer a chance to learn about Gaga’s family

We often think of rock stars like Lady Gaga as being so absorbed in their music, tours, and entourage that they no longer have time for a real family. But that couldn’t be further from the truth for Lady Gaga, as “Gaga: Five Foot Two” makes clear. What quickly becomes clear from this documentary is that her family is what helped to make her such a strong person. There’s genuine love and affection, and we see that through each of her family members – Angelina Germanotta (the grandmother), Cynthia (her mother), Joe (her father) and Natali (her sister). The big moment, of course, comes when it’s time to unveil her new studio album, “Joanne,” which has special meaning for her and her family.

“Gaga: Five Foot Two” shows us the celebrities in Gaga’s life

We always knew that the world of Lady Gaga was wonderful and fabulous, and this new Netflix documentary gives us the briefest glimpse at the types of celebrities whom she interacts with on a daily basis – people like Florence Welch, Tony Bennett, and Donatella Versace.

And, where the documentary really covers new ground is in its exploration of Lady Gaga’s feud with legendary musician Madonna. Is this just one of those staged feuds in the music world for both people to benefit from the resulting PR buzz? Or is there a real reason for two of this generation’s top musicians to have animosity for each other? Those are just two of the questions that this Netflix documentary helps to answer.

“Gaga: Five Foot Two” is unfiltered “year in the life” saga

The documentary takes on a cinema vérité approach, showing us a real, unfiltered look at Gaga, her entourage, and her adventures. And we see that not everything is glamorous for this rock star. For example, part of the documentary deals with Lady Gaga’s physical problems, including her ongoing struggle with chronic pain. It’s not easy to be on tour for months at a time, or to carry out all of her high-energy performances, time and time again, and it’s clear that this performance lifestyle has taken a physical toll on our rock star hero.

And, as part of this “year in the life” saga (which some have compared to “Madonna: Truth or Dare”), we get to see some of the other creative projects in Lady Gaga’s life. For example, she is taking on a guest role in “American Horror Story: Roanoke” and this could be another way to tap into her immense and very unique talents. And, of course, she is always looking for ways to make her stage performances all the more stunning. What emerges from this documentary is the story of a much more nuanced, complex character than we might have assumed. For many of us, Lady Gaga is larger than life. But she is very human, with her own weaknesses and frailties.

“Gaga: Five Foot Two” has the narrative arc of a true documentary film

On the surface, it might be easy to dismiss Netflix’s “Gaga: Five Foot Two” as just a celebrity puff piece, just another tool in the PR toolkit to build out her worldwide fame and generate sales for her new album. But do you know what? This is a real documentary film, and as proof of that, it actually debuted at the very prestigious Toronto International Film Festival before starting to stream on Netflix.

That, perhaps, is what gives this 2017 documentary film such a sense of realism – it is not just a rough cut compilation of unrelated scenes. Instead, it follows a true narrative arc. Yes, it might have a lot of rapid-fire cuts, but that’s only to intensify the feeling that we are one of the world’s busiest and most active performers. Everything that Lady Gaga does is high energy, and this documentary tries to convey that.

To be sure, you will learn a lot about Lady Gaga in Netflix’s “Gaga: Five Foot Two.” You will meet her entourage and her family, you will see her encounters with her fans, and you will see the making of two wonderfully creative works – her new studio album “Joanne” and her Super Bowl LI halftime show. And, best of all, you will learn about Lady Gaga not just as a performer and creative artist, but also as a wonderfully talented individual with a fascinating story to tell.

Charlize Theron Kicks Ass in “Atomic Blonde”

Charlize Theron is the super-sexy, super-talented female spy that movie audiences have always wanted. In every scene in which she appears in “Atomic Blonde,” she dominates the action – whether she’s fighting off groups of bad guys with a dazzling array of action moves or slinking around in some impossibly sexy outfits. In short, Charlize Theron kicks ass in “Atomic Blonde.”

Charlize Theron’s character is James Bond meets John Wick

Some have tried to compare Charlize Theron’s character, MI6 Agent Lorraine Broughton, to a female James Bond. Yes, she’s employed by Her Majesty’s Secret Service. Yes, she’s impossibly cosmopolitan and suave. Yes, she’s trying to outwit a rival group of spies and double agents. And, yes, there are scenes where she’s downing shots of her favorite vodka drink (not shaken, and not stirred, by the way).

But the real inspiration for Charlize Theron’s character is really John Wick. And that’s not just a coincidence – David Leitch, the co-director of the first “John Wick” film, is also the director of this film. As a result, we get a character very much like John Wick – this is one badass woman you don’t want to mess with. She doesn’t need a gun to kill you, she’s just as adept as using the stiletto heel of one of her glamorous pairs of shoes. She’s perfectly willing to improvise, using a common garden hose as an unlikely form of strangulation. She’s able to stab someone with a set of car keys or shoot them straight up with unerring ease.

Charlize Theron is stunning in perfectly choreographed fight scenes

And where Charlize Theron really shines is in her fight scenes. Make no mistake about it – she’s perfectly willing and able to take on all comers. She’s in peak fighting shape, and employs a unique form of “lethal creativity” (according to one film reviewer) in devising new ways to take out her opponents. That’s what makes the action in this film so irresistible – every action fight scene is almost balletic in motion, with bodies moving to a perfectly choreographed beat.

And despite the frenetic pace of the action, Theron is always in control. Whether she’s careening through the streets of Cold War-era Berlin, where much of the action takes place, or fighting off Soviet assassin spies, you know that Theron is going to jump, kick, shoot and maim her way to victory. She’s always ready to kick ass, even if she’s just arrived in a foreign city and is trapped in traffic. “Trust no one,” she’s told. But there’s no real need to tell Charlize Theron that – she’s not the trusting type.

And what makes it all so badass is that Theron always looks better after fighting off her assailants. Even blood spatter in her hair looks more like funky pink highlights than any sign that she’s just been in a bloody battle. And the non-stop action is all synced to the pounding pulse of a 1980s soundtrack, in which songs from the likes of Depeche Mode and New Order help to highlight the action. At times, the movie feels like just one badass music video: Who really cares about the plot line and narrative, as long as our Atomic Blonde is out there, shooting up the place and killing all the bad buys?

“Atomic Blonde” perfects the cartoon-style violence of a graphic novel

In fact, sometimes Charlize Theron kicks so much ass on the big screen that it almost seems like the violence we’d expect from a superhero cartoon. And that’s no mistake – the movie sometimes attains a comic book aesthetic as a result of all the action. The movie is actually based on a graphic novel – “The Coldest City” – and so it’s no coincidence that some of the fights are so ultra-violent and ultra-bloody.

Charlize Theron is a stone-cold killer (literally) in “Atomic Blonde”

And what makes Theron so deadly is that she’s so cool, calm and collected throughout. She’s a stone-cold killer, feeling little or no remorse for all the bloody victims left in her wake. As if to emphasize that point, David Leitch films scenes with Charlize Theron, naked in an ice bath, as she sips an icy cocktail. She’s an icy blonde you don’t want to mess with. She may be dressed to the 9s in a slinky dress and impossibly high stiletto heels, but she’ll take out any baddies just as easily as if she were dressed in full military camo gear. She’s just that cold of a killer.

Charlize Theron exudes a type of savage sexiness

If you’re used to Charlize Theron film roles in which she deliberately disfigures herself (the role of Imperator Furiosa in “Mad Max: Fury Road” comes to mind), then you’re in for a real treat in “Atomic Blonde.” This female spy-assassin-killer is as savage as she is sexy. It’s a rare combination on the big screen.

And perhaps one of the sexiest scenes in the movie is one in which Charlize Theron describes her impossibly hot tryst with a French intel officer (played by Sofia Boutella of “The Mummy”). Her handlers at MI6 literally can’t believe what they’re hearing – and they don’t want her to stop. It’s just that hot and sexy.

This is one “Atomic Blonde” you don’t want to double-cross

The true mark of any badass is that you don’t ever want to cross him (or her). And Charlize Theron is very clear in this film that she’s not someone you want to double-cross or triple-cross. It can be sometimes hard to follow all the plot developments, but one thing is clear – Charlize Theron is more assassin than spy, and she’ll always get the person she wants.

No doubt, the summer of 2017 has been very good to us. We first got Gal Gadot in “Wonder Woman” as a female superhero who kicks ass. Now we have Charlize Theron as a female super-spy who kicks ass. If given our choice, we’d take Charlize Theron. There’s not a single one of her scenes in “Atomic Blonde” in which you can’t take your eyes off her. This film is so good it almost makes us long for the good old days of the Cold War, in which spies and super-spies played out an epic cat-and-mouse game in European capitals. Forget James Bond, though, we now have Charlize Theron as Agent Lorraine Broughton.

Chris Pratt Shines in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2”

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 is the sequel to the hugely successful Guardians of the Galaxy. This franchise is very different from many other Marvel movies. It took place in space, was a sci-fi fantasy, and most importantly, the characters were not well-known. They were not household names that had a huge fan following. However, when it did hit the theaters, people had fun watching it and it went on to become a successful venture. Now, making Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 could not have been an easy task. Guardians of the Galaxy had no expectations to meet, but for its sequel, it is a completely different playing field. There was too much hype for the movie and it could not have been easy to match.

The good news for the movie is that without buckling under the pressure, it delivered the comedy. The visuals were stunning and the space battles were worth watching. The first movie made the fans fall in love with its characters, whether it is Star Lord, Gamora, Drax, and the adorable Groot and Rocket Raccoon. There are many old and new characters in this movie that will fight for your attention. But, amidst all the chaos, Chris Pratt aka Star Lord has again managed to shine. This must have been especially difficult with the super-adorable Baby Groot, the charming Rocket and the amazing Yondu in the movie.

Chris Pratt is undoubtedly an amazing actor, and more so a comedian. He has made a career acting in comedy series which makes a comedy movie like Guardians of the Galaxy, right up his alley. Even outside of the movie, Chris Pratt was the one who promoted the movie the most. He could be seen on every event and talk show just creating the hype around the movie. He got people excited to watch the movie. Why wouldn’t he? This was a movie that changed his life.

Chris Pratt had to go through his fair share of struggle before he stumbled on Hollywood success with movies like Guardians of the Galaxy, Jurassic World, and The Lego Movie. Christopher Michael Pratt was born on June 21, 1979 to Kathleen and Daniel Pratt in Virginia, Minnesota. He comes from a French, English and Canadian ancestry. Later his family moved to Washington where he ended up on the wrestling team. He always wanted to be rich and famous. However, Chris did not make much headway in his early life which included dropping out of community college, working as a coupon salesman, and even a stripper for a brief period of time.

At the young age of 19, Chris moved to Hawaii with a friend, where he again picked up odd jobs to support his life on the beach in a van. It was while waiting tables in Hawaii that an actress/director noticed the young man. She found him to be a good fit for a horror show she was going to make in Los Angeles. This one job made him realize that he wanted to be a part of showbiz and he went around town auditioning for roles. He finally got the role of Harold Brighton Abbott on the TV series, Everwood. After four seasons, the show went off air, but Chris Pratt had already found another gig on The O.C. By this time, Chris was a well-known face, who particularly impressed the audiences with his comedy and did not really mind bearing it all. During this time, Chris Pratt was called on to read for a few iconic roles in Star Trek and Avatar, but it wasn’t meant to be. The producers turned him down on account of Chris lacking the ‘it’ factor, whatever that means. At this time, Chris started rethinking about his career. Dwelling on that time, Chris even commented, “People have to work. I just don’t want it to be at a f—ing restaurant.”.

In 2009, Chris went on to do a small role in the comedy, Parks and Recreation. Andy Dwyer, his character was not supposed to be a significant part of the story. However, the audience loved him so much that the producers offered him a regular spot. As the comedy series became more popular, Chris Pratt’s fan following increased proportionately.

It was in 2011 that Pratt auditioned for the part of Scott Hatteberg in Moneyball. However, the directors told him that he was ‘too fat’ to play the role. According to Chris Pratt, he had gained 40 pounds at the time, which he could easily blame on his girlfriend (now wife), Anna Faris’ cooking. He took up the challenge and started working out diligently and lost a total of 30 pounds, resent his pictures to the casting director and won the role. That is some determination! Moneyball did a lot of good things for his career. However, the single most important was that Chris was now not typecast to the immature and goofball character he had on Parks and Recreation. He was seen as a versatile actor who could play serious roles too. Chris Pratt was now seen by directors as a possible lead actor. This was the time when Guardian of the Galaxy came along.

The directors of Guardians of the Galaxy had been on the hunt for a movie lead, but had not found anyone who fit the bill. Chris Pratt had been approached for the role, but who couldn’t seem to shake off what the producers had told him earlier about missing the ‘it’ factor. It was during this time that Chris Pratt was asked to meet the director. He was finalized within minutes and the nude scene in the movie, well, played to his strengths. It was the break Chris Pratt needed and he became an international celebrity when the first movie released.

Chris Pratt’s performance in the first edition of the Guardians of the Galaxy was loved across the board. He already had a fan following, but then the unassuming Marvel movie graduated him to the next level of fame. He was now an international star who knew his craft well and a body to make anybody swoon. He was the complete package.

Another important factor that contributed to Chris Pratt stealing the show is the plot of the story. Guardians of the Galaxy was a movie that was all about building the entire world in which the future stories would take place. Yes, the characters were properly introduced, but mostly the movie was doing the groundwork about how sci-fi fantasy fits in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With this job done, the Volume 2 focused on characters. This movie is all about who each of the member of the ‘Gaurdians’ are as people and why they gel well together. They do argue, but still stick to each other because they are pretty much the same. All in all, this is a story or character-based movie, and Star Lord or Chris Pratt is of course the glue that is holding the whole story together. Not to give away any spoilers here, but it is a lot about Star Lord meeting his father and what he tells him.

Given that Guardians was a career-defining movie for Chris Pratt and that the plot revolves around his origins, he really does not have that much screen time. However, that does not stop Chris Pratt from making his Star Lord shine. His constant arguments with the crew and his fight with Rocket are really enjoyable. His background in comedy already gives him an edge over other actors. Other than that, he is an A-lister with blockbuster movies behind him. The first movie was different. He was a lovable actor, who people knew mostly from Parks and Recreation. However, all of that has changed. He is now in the big league. He has garnered a huge fan following now. This alone is enough to make him the star in the movie. But, add his acting chops and his great looks and you cannot ignore him.

Guardian of the Galaxy Vol.2 was a movie that deliberately put Chris Pratt on the back seat to let the other characters develop. It was a bold move that is nothing less of a genius. Each of the actors in the movie did their part well and the CGI delivered too. It was a successful movie that people enjoyed thoroughly. It is difficult for a sequel to keep the momentum going like its predecessors. But, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 has managed to pull it off and the fans cannot wait for the next adventure that the crazy bunch will have next.

How Comedians Cope with the 2016 Presidential Race

Political satire and comedy have always been an integral part of U.S. Presidential elections in the recent era; American comedians have often guided voters through confusing and challenging times in an election and made light of situations. There is information coming at us from all directions, and an election year can be quite maddening. Comedians strive to help us make sense of it all and smile a little in the process. This year’s presidential race is no different, but it has definitely been one of the most interesting elections to watch unfold.

New York, the center of all things comedy, has seen a stark rise in the interest in onstage political comedy, because of the spike in interest in the presidential race this year. The heavy media coverage of the two frontrunners has only added more fuel to the fire. In fact, comedy club owners think that if Donald Trump is elected as president, it would be dream run for them and the comedians (at a terrible cost though). The absurdity of the election has created good business for comedians and provided them with endless material.

Donald Trump has certainly provided comedians with useful material since he was declare the Republican nominee. Saturday Night Live welcomed its 41st season with a jibe at Trump; Taran Killam donned the role of Trump on the show, and more recently, Alec Baldwin appeared with a hilarious rendition of the nominee. Melania Trump was not forgotten in the sketch; Cecily Strong did a great job portraying Mrs. Trump. When comedians imitate/mock candidates like Trump, it just reinforces the image of Trump that many voters have in mind. For instance, Trump is known for not delving into the finer details whenever questions about national policies are put out to him. On Saturday Night Live, Trump was also seen following in his own footsteps: when asked about his plans as president, he answered, “You want to know my plan? Here’s my plan: ‘I got the smartest guys.’” A good amount of time was also dedicated to Trump’s constant efforts to villainize the Latino community.

Then, there was John Oliver’s masterstroke against the Donald Trump campaign. In an incredibly honest episode that set out to critically analyze the popularity of Donald Trump, Oliver credited Trump last and implied many negative things about his business acumen as well. The best part of the show was the revelation that Trump’s original family name was Drumpf. He urged the American people to vote for the man that he is and not for the illusion of grandeur that his last name creates. Such was the popularity of the episode that Donald Drumpf became the second-most Googled candidate name. Even Hillary Clinton, Ted Cruz, or Marco Rubio could not match the popularity of Donald Drumpf! The only name with more searches than Donald Drumpf was Donald Trump.

However, Trump is a comedian’s conundrum too; the satire is lost on him. There’s no way comedians can come up with any exaggeration to make the joke memorable, because Trump is truly the over-dramatized version of himself, and many people cannot believe he’s actually a nominee. Trump has been all over the news and comedy circuits for his antics, mannerisms, and of course, his toupee. But there are times when comedians do not have to work on making jokes to mock him – his own words are enough. In fact, Democrats may want Trump to be in the news as a butt of jokes, which ensures he is projected as a joker rather than a serious presidential nominee. Whether this strategy works in their favor or backfires will be hard to say because jokes on Trump don’t stick. Appearance after appearance, he outdoes himself on the comedy front, while his supporters cheer away.

Hillary Clinton has been on the radar of the comedians as well, but she is no match for all the entertainment Donald Trump satire has to offer. Most jokes on her have pointed at her stance on different matters of national interest, or about her marriage rather than her appearance. Gilbert Gottfried recently jibed, “What punishment should she get for her conduct in the email scandal? Probably the guillotine….” One of the best impersonations of Clinton was delivered by the talented Kate McKinnon on Saturday Night Live. Comedian Camille Theobald joked about the candidates recently in NYC, and gave some valuable insight on the role of comedians in the election process, and called them ‘society’s truth tellers.’ She said it was their job to make significant issues interesting, so that potential voters will actually pay attention.

The 2016 election is probably the most insane and interesting race to the presidency that America has seen in ages. On one side, there’s Trump, a treasure chest of jokes with his ridiculous behavior. Then there’s Clinton, whose supporters are ready to heckle comedians who make fun of her. However, that will clearly not stop comedians from taking shots at the Presidential candidates – Americans, enjoy the humor while it lasts.

Has Rosario Dawson’s Political Agenda Gone Too Far?

rosario dawson arrested

Rosario Dawson has been one of the most outspoken supporters of the U.S. Presidential candidate, Bernie Sanders. In addition to participating in his campaign appearances, she has been organizing political protests, and even trying to gather momentum for his campaign on the internet. Her efforts have inevitably led to many controversial statements from her, as well as heated exchanges with those who support candidates other than Senator Sanders. Dawson is often seen as the face of the Mexican-Americans in Hollywood. So, what she has to say does matter in the public’s eye. In the context of her consistently controversial statements and actions, it is difficult not to wonder, if her role in the current U.S. Presidential election has gone too far.

Earlier this month, she was taking part in a round table during a Harlem Town Hall hosted by the Bernie Sanders camp. There, she attacked the current President of the United States. She said that people supported Obama and thought that he was their ‘guy’. But, they lost their faith in him within two months of him becoming the President. Her statements caught the attention of Jamil Smith, who is MTV’s senior national correspondent. He slammed her on Twitter for her statements, and asked her to explain her statements.

Dawson reasoned that Obama didn’t utilize social media tools like Twitter to mobilize voters and overcome the opposition offered by the Republican Party throughout his Presidential term. “Republicans will laugh in President Sanders’s face if he tells them to look out at protesters”, he added. The entire issue did not result in any healthy discussion or insights into anything of importance. It looked more like an attention grabbing exercise on part of Dawson, which made many people cringe. This is not the first time Dawson expressed strong opinions regarding a political personality.

The Hollywood star, who donned the role of a Mexican-American civil rights activist, Dolores Huerta, in Cesar Chavez, hit at the very person whom she portrayed in her movie. Huerta has been supporting Hillary Clinton in the current Presidential election. Following Huerta’s announcement, declaring the same, Dawson wrote an open letter to her. She claimed that Huerta’s political stance was misguided. Huerta criticized Sanders for his voting history on immigration, and explained that Hillary Clinton has a more realistic plan to pass a comprehensive immigration reform. She even added that even though Sanders may have had a change of heart, he has largely remained disconnected from the entire immigration issue for decades.

Responding to Huerta in her open letter, Dawson explained, with a number of detailed charts, how Clinton’s stance is in direct contrast to her actions over the years. She even went as far as claiming that Clinton’s track record goes directly against what Huerta was saying, and that is exactly what activists like her have fought for. She later ended the open letter hoping that such meaningful debates continue and make things better for immigrants.

This was not an isolated case of Dawson’s criticism of Clinton. Dawson has been very vocal in hitting against Hillary Clinton for quite a while now. In a discussion hosted by Young Turks on Clinton’s foreign policy credentials, Dawson claimed that Clinton exhibits her hypocrisy in her stance on the matters of Israel. She said that while Clinton considers Trump a horrible person for proposing to build a wall between the U.S. and Mexico, she does not condemn the Netanyahu for wanting to do the same between Israel and Palestine. She even liked Clinton to Madeleine Albright, the once Secretary of State, who had claimed that 500,000 dead Iraqi children were worth the war. Further, Dawson claimed that Clinton’s immigration stances are dubious at best as the former First Lady has never interviewed any Syrian, Honduran, Libyan, or Iraqi kid.

Then, recently, Dawson was arrested at a Democracy Spring rally held in the capitol. The political protest had been going on for a week, during which she had received multiple warnings from the police. Democratic Spring has been arguing that elections have been dominated by special interests, and money. The activists had been pushing Congress for dropping laws that make it difficult to overturn
Supreme Court laws that are anti-people. Dawson was detained and was let go after she paid a small fine of $50. Later, she explained that the police gave her many warnings, since the arrest of such a celebrity can generate a lot of publicity.

Dawson is not entirely wrong about one issue. She has been getting a lot of publicity. In fact, she has been the celebrity element that was missing from Sanders’s campaign. She has been so active throughout the campaign that many consider her to be the vocal surrogate of Sanders. For instance, Sanders has always stayed away from any dirty politics, at least in the media. He has not used Hillary’s
husband, former President Bill Clinton’s affair with Monica Lewinsky during their time in the White House to try and hurt his opponent’s prospects. In one of the interviews, however, he called Bill’s affair “disgraceful” and “unacceptable”. When the same topic was brought before him again in Iowa, he simply said, “I am running against Hillary Clinton. I’m not running against Bill Clinton.” That was as far as he was ready to comment on that issue.

rosario dawson arrested was very chill

On the other hand, it appears that Dawson is serving as the sharp end of the stick when it comes to the Sanders campaign. Although, she too did not directly use Bill-Lewinsky affair to tarnish the image of the Clintons, she broached the subject of the affair on her own. One can argue that this was done to jog the memory of voters, and turn their opinions. She said to the Wilmington, Delaware crowd, “I’m with Monica Lewinsky on this … bullying is bad.”

It is typical of political campaigns to be wrought with image attacks, lies, promises, and a lot of drama. For now, it appears that Dawson has been doing everything that is characteristic of every Presidential election over the past few decades. While it is certainly not appreciated, it is not wrong to say that this is how politics have come to work in this country. So, Dawson’s political agenda is quite in line with the dynamics of all Presidential candidates’ election strategy. Whether her actions have Sanders’ complete support, can only be speculated at best.

What We Got Out of Kanye West’s ‘Life of Pablo’ Release

Kanye west released 'Life of Pablo" on Spotify

Life of Pablo is a much awaited album or at least it has been made so by Kanye West, who has called it ‘the best album of all time’. Well, that may or may not be true, what is true, though, is that this bet of being the best puts a lot of pressure on himself as well as on the people he is working with. When such a claim is made, everyone has to deliver their best, at least for the sake of it. On the other hand, it does come with its benefits. It makes people care more and talk more about his work. It creates a buzz that makes people want to see what the fuss is all about. Even if they want to criticize his work, they first have to go see his self-proclaimed greatest album yet.

The album has just now been released to the public for free under the Spotify platform, you can listen here:

So, at the core of everything is that album, which has taken years in the making. Kanye has not released a studio album in the last three years. This one too has gone through a lot of tweaking. The tracks on the album have gone through a lot of changes in the sequencing. Even the name of the album has gone through multiple changes. It was initially called Swift, which was later changed to Waves and then finally to The Life of Pablo.

The album has a total of eighteen songs that were first tweeted by Kanye himself. The list includes Ultra Light Beams, Freestyle 4, Father Stretch My Hands Pt1 Pt2, and Famous among others. Four of his earlier creations have also found a place in the album. Fans will find songs like No More Parties in L.A., Real Friends, Fade and Wave familiar.

Kanye has a lot of friends on the album. There is Kendrick Lamar in No More Parties in L.A., Real Friends features Ty Dolla $ign, who also appears in Fade along with Post Malone. Vic Mensa can be seen in the popular song, Wolves. Chance the Rapper, Kid Cudi, Rihanna, Chris Brown and The Weeknd, among others have also contributed to Kanye West’s latest album.

Kanye Makes a lot of statements through his performances, some say they are all over the place, others say he's a genius

In an innovative Kanye West style, the album was unveiled on February 11, 2016 in Madison Square Garden, with much fanfare and with 20,000 people in attendance. Different pop singers have different ways in which they make their albums popular. Some of them go on world tours to promote it, while some create an explosion of buzz by dropping their work online, unannounced. However, what Kanye did was risky, or was it? He is the king of creating a buzz, whether it is about himself or his album. This is true for most things today. Anyone and everyone, who can work up curiosity on the internet and capture the imagination of people, sells. That’s about it. Not only did he create a lot of curiosity and managed to generate interest in his album by calling it the best, but also made arrangements to maintain the grand status of it. While Kanye launched Life of Pablo live in New York, it was also simultaneously streamed in theaters across 20 countries, including Australia, Switzerland and Spain. This did give the album a much needed boost, but the actual event itself turned out to be disappointing.

Here is a little back story to understand what happened at the launch. It was not all about music, there was a fashion launch too. All this while, Kanye has also been working on his fashion line and he decided that the launch of his new album was the right time to showcase his fashion line at the Madison Square Garden. Vanessa Beecroft, the famous artist, choreographed the models, which stood the entire time the album was played. Many people think that the over-emphasis on the fashion brand made the music look secondary.

The album indeed sounds a little distracted. At one time, Kanye had claimed that this was a gospel album, but the focus is just not there. The Life of Pablo has some really good tracks and some that are just disappointing. Also, the album feels like a mess at times, where Kanye has dropped his thoughts in between and the fans have to figure out how they fit in the story. These little nuggets are not bad poems; they are good pieces of writing. It felt like the star has tried to put together all the part of its life together, but there is a glue missing to hold them all together. They can just feel a little misplaced at times. It is not as well-structured as the earlier works of Kanye. It can be seen by some as a highly self-absorbed piece of work, touching the boundaries of delusion, and therefore, lacking perspective. This is a fragmented piece of music collection and maybe a little underwhelming to some or may sound like a masterpiece to others. Each to their own.

The critical response to the album has been mixed too. While some of the reviewers thought that it was a delightful piece of work, the others felt that it lacked focus.

After the big ticket launch of the album on February 11 and its release on February 14, all the copies of the album were taken off. Fans were bewildered and it was then that Kanye came up with surprising news. On February 15, he announced that his beloved album will never be on Apple. He told his fans that the songs would only be available on the TIDAL platform. Kanye’s announcement did not end there. He also informed his fans about the 40 new songs with Kendrick and the other 40 with the Young Thud. All of these songs are also going to make their debut on the TIDAL platform as well.

The Problem with Kesha’s Manager and Sony Music

Kesha was denied a cancellation of her contract with Sony music by a court order

The controversy surrounding the legal battle between Kesha and her former mentor, Lukasz Gottwald, known better as Dr. Luke, has created storms for well past a year now. During the certainly tumultuous journey that Kesha has endured so far, her fans have certainly stuck with the star and have given their full support for her. The lengthy legal battle is not over yet, and it is not clear in which direction it is headed. While it is great to see Kesha finding immense support during these difficult times, there are other parties involved in this, who have been at the receiving end of the flak. Dr. Luke and Sony Music have been largely facing heat from the star’s fans and media in general, for holding their position and not relieving Kesha from her contractual obligations. Many observers have commented that this is a sheer case of prejudice on the part of the fans and the media, as they have no way of knowing the facts behind the case, and whether the allegations made by Kesha against Dr. Luke are even true. There is certainly more to this storm than what meets the eye. Let’s look at the facts as they are available.

Kesha Had her own show in MTV called My Crazy Beautiful Life
Kesha Had her own show in MTV called My Crazy Beautiful Life

Kesha has alleged that her manager, Dr. Luke had sexually molested her when she was only a teenager about a decade ago. She also claims that he has continually abused her since then. While the allegations are yet to be thoroughly probed by the legal authorities, New York Supreme Court Justice Shirley Kornreich noted that Kesha has not been able to produce any form of proofs to back up her claim. Hence, she has asked Kesha to provide something solid such as after-abuse medical reports, and something that could help investigate the matter in detail.

In January 2014, Kesha was admitted to a rehab on account of an eating disorder. Later, the star claimed that her admission into the rehab was because of the abuse that Dr. Luke used to hurl at her. It is claimed that Dr. Luke called her “fat f**king refrigerator”. Later in October the same year, Kesha and her mother went ahead and filed a sexual harassment case against Dr. Luke. This is where the whole mess began to take shape.

In the legal case, Kesha’s legal team has argued that because Dr. Luke has abuse on her, Kesha finds herself unable to work with him, his label, Kemosabe Records, and its partner, Sony Music. Therefore, they have demanded an injunction against the contract. It is to be noted that Kesha’s contract demands that she record six more albums with the two music producers. However, her team has put forth that since a music star’s career is usually a short one, irreparable damage could be inflicted on her career, if she is not allowed to record outside the two recording companies. Dr. Luke has come up front on this and has offered to not involve himself with the entire process of her recording music for his label and Sony Music. That way, she would not have to deal with him, and thus, not feel any distress of working with him.

This is quite a practical solution, when especially considered against the fact that Dr. Luke has invested over $60 million in the star’s career. Even the judge sees the logic in this, and she questioned Kesha about this offer. Ms. Kornreich observed that since she would be recording without Dr. Luke’s involvement, and also not have her career jeopardized, it would be wrong to nullify a heavily negotiated contract, on the basis of claims that do not even have any actual proof yet. Thus, the judge ordered against the injunction.

Dr. Luke’s lawyers have alleged that in the light of Kesha’s recent drop in fame, she has fabricated the allegations in the effort to extort money from him. Kesha also appealed to the court that Sony has set her up to fail. The judge noted that it is in the interest of Sony to make profits, and that is only possible if Kesha succeeds and no the other way around. She refused to presume that a corporation such as Sony would give up making profits on their investment.
So far, whatever has been observed in this case, it seems that Dr. Luke and Sony have been winning the legal battle. However, not all is good news for Dr. Luke. In the aftermath of Kesha’s lawsuit against him, he had filed a lawsuit of his own against the singer. In that, he alleged that Kesha and her mother, Pebe have resorted to publishing false claims and outrageous statements about him. He filed another case against Pepe and Kesha’s lawyer for sullying his name. However, a New York court judge has dropped the case. This is the first win for Kesha in the prolonged legal battle.

Apart from the allegations of harassment, Dr. Luke is facing many other claims from his former protégé. According to Kesha, Dr. Luke has fooled the public in many ways. For instance, he has on numerous occasions taken credit for songs that he did not even write, and allegedly did not produce a TV show that he has claimed to have. Further, he is supposed to have constantly berated Kesha’s work, and on one particular occasion, he got to write a part of the song for her. Kesha makes a claim that after having suffered years of abuse and harassment from him, she is no more capable of working with Dr. Luke.

At first, she had filed the lawsuit against only him, but later also included Sony in it, saying that the music company put female artists in harm’s way by giving Dr. Luke absolute authority on the creative aspects of their music. Sony has replied to this by citing her previous statement, in which she claimed that Dr. Luke had bullied her into silence. In effect, Sony is maintaining that since she never spoke about any such event, they could not possibly have taken any action at all. So, she can’t have it both ways by claiming to be bullied into silence and yet, expect some action from Sony, who could not possibly have known about any such matters.

It is not clear where this whole controversy is going. But, one thing is for sure. The decade old friendship between Kesha and Dr. Luke has ruined, if there was any in the first place. And, both of their future as well as Sony Music’s reputation hang in suspense.

The Real “Joy” Mangano and Jennifer Lawrence’s Character Compared

Jennifer Lawrence as Joy

Joy was a 2015 Christmas release, directed by David O. Russell. The movie’s cast included some big names such as Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, and Bradley Cooper, among others. It was an inspirational tale of how a woman, who is down in the dumps, rises like a phoenix, all through her ingenuity and creativity. The best part is that the dreamy story of rags to riches is actually based on the life of Joy Mangano. She is a real life self-made millionaire, who started selling her uniquely designed Miracle Mop, which went on to sell in the order of millions. This product enabled her to make more such designs, patent more such products, and keep going on the path to success.

The entire Family in Joy
The entire family eats in the film Joy

The movie is inspired from the story, but it does not claim to be a biopic. Many of the characters and events are said to be tweaked for the silver screen version of Joy’s life. The director and the actress did not meet the real Joy until the very end of the movie. This would not have been the case, if the character was entirely based on her life. The creative team from the movie had permission from Joy Mangano to make any changes that they deem fit. This raises the question – were the characters of Joy and those around her also tweaked to make it more palatable to the audience? Keeping reading to find out.

Joy Mangano was born in New York and spent her childhood in Long Island. She lives there even to this day. In the movie, the character of Jennifer Lawrence is also brought up in Long Island. She receives a lot of encouragement by her grandmother in the movie, as did the real Joy Mangano.

Robert DeNiro plays Joy's dad
Robert DeNiro plays Joy’s dad

In the movie, Joy has been showcased as a bright kid with a flair for inventions. She recognizes problems and tries to come up with a solution. This is very similar to what Joy Mangano was like, at least when she was young. As shown in the movie, she made a fluorescent collar for dogs when she was a teenager. At the time, Mangano was working with an animal hospital. Her invention was designed to save the dogs’ lives when they were on the road, as the drivers can see them from a distance because of the shining collar at night.

The character of Jennifer Lawrence in the movie drops out of college to help her parents through their divorce. However, the real Joy did no such thing. This was a twist that the director added in order to add a hint of drama to the story. Joy actually completed her degree in Business Administration from the Pace University, and this was also where she met her future husband. Her husband was not a Venezuelan singer as has been portrayed in the motion picture. Also Joy never had any half-sister named Peggy. This particular character is completely made up by the director.

Joy had a very rough life, but she overcame the most difficult things for a woman her age during that time period
Joy had a very rough life, but she overcame the most difficult things for a woman her age during that time period

What is rightly depicted is her struggle after the divorce. However, the number of children she has is not two, but three. She had to run from pillar to post to make ends meet for her family. It was the lowest point in her life where she was doing different jobs to keep afloat. However, she never gave up on herself and it was during this time that she came up with the idea of the Miracle Mop. As in the movie, she gives form to her idea in her father’s workshop, which she actually did in real life.

The character of Bradley Cooper, the person who helps in getting her product on QVC is mostly based on Joseph Segel. However, it is not entirely Joseph Segel, but more of a condensed representation of the all executives at QVC. Joy was able to make them understand her product and went on-air with their help.

Bradley Cooper is only another name to the brilliant cast the movie has

The character of Joy is shown to fail the first time she airs on television. No such thing happened to the real Joy. When Joy jumped in to pitch her product to the consumers it was an instant hit. She did sell

18,000 units in one hour as shown in the movie. So, yes, the character of Joy Mangano is as forthcoming as she has been shown in the movies. She is a go-getter and a great saleswoman. When she appeared on the infomercial, she connected with the audiences and made sure that she got her message through.

Joy and her dad go through several rough stages in their lives
Joy and her dad go through several rough stages in their lives

Despite going through a rough time after the divorce, Joy Mangano is still friends with her ex-husband. In fact, he is an active part of her company. She recognizes his ability as a salesman and both have a good personal and professional relationship.

Like the movie, Joy Mangano, did make a switch from QVC to the Home Shopping Network. She did this after she got an offer from what is now called, HSN. This switch proved to be a great decision for Joy. Huggable Hangers, another of her inventions became the bestselling item in the history of the network. The deal took Joy to new heights.

Whether it is the real life of Joy Mangano or the on-screen rendition by Jennifer Lawrence, both have very aptly proven their point. Both only talk about making one’s dream come true, no matter how big or how ridiculous it may sound. No matter how many times failures knock people down, those who rise again, eventually win in the end. Joy of the reel and the real life, both had to go through an extremely difficult personal time, the financial crisis and had to hustle a lot to make the product happen. She also did not rest on her laurels even after tasting success and kept inventing new designs. She was self-motivated and made her visions happen and in the process, created a better life for herself and her children.

Joy's former husband

There may be certain factual differences between the real Joy and the screen Joy, but both are equally inspirational. The moral of the story remains the same and that is what makes all the difference.
